Conservation focuses on preserving an artwork’s physical stability and slowing deterioration, while restoration addresses aesthetic damage to improve visual coherence. At RPA Studio, restoration is always carried out as part of a conservation-led approach, using reversible methods to respect both the artwork’s integrity and the artist’s original intent.

The process typically involves the initial contact with details regarding the artwork in question. From there, an initial estimate can be provided. If this is agreeable, the artwork will then come in for a full in-person assessment and treatment plan. The treatments will be discussed with you in advance and the restoration will begin once you are happy with the recommendations. As the restoration progresses, we will send photographs and updates to keep you thoroughly informed.

Professional conservation does not typically reduce a painting’s value — in fact, most major artworks have undergone restoration at some stage. Value is more likely to be affected by untreated damage or deterioration, as this can obscure original details or, in some cases, lead to the complete loss of the artwork.
